Elephant Class Lion Class Jaguar Class

Welcome to the Year 5 and 6 pages for 2023-2024
In our phase there are four classes; Elephant, Lion and Jaguar.
As we are the oldest children at school, we always work hard to set a good example for the other children to follow. Many of the Year 5 and 6 children have important jobs within the school such as Chaplaincy Team, Play Leaders, Sports Ambassadors, School Councillors, Peer Mentors and also Buddies to the early years' children. This year we have split the classes into Year 5 (Elephant and Lion) and Year 6 (Jaguar) Classes.
Here, you can find lots of important information including what we are learning about this term, important dates, display photographs and information about everything we have been getting up to!
Please contact upperkeystage2@holyfamily.swindon.sch.uk if you have any queries regarding your child in Year 5/6 and Mrs Gee will get back to you.

Learning in School

RE
The Creation unit in Years 5 and 6 enables the children to explore how we become co-creators. The starting point for exploration is the two creation stories in Genesis. They will explore the questions raised by these two stories and what Creation means today. The children will reflect on their own God-given talents and how the live their lives in response to the teaching of Christ and as co-creators who need to protect God’s creation. |

English
The book that we will be using to base our learning around will be Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. This book is about a neglected child from a deprived home in London, Willie Beech. Willie is evacuated to the country during the Second World War to live with Tom Oakley, an old widower. With Tom, Willie flourishes, develops friendships and finds real happiness and security for the first time. Then he has to return to London to his mother, and his old life experiences wait for him again there, only to worsen. This is an accessible, but powerful, emotionally charged novel, which explores themes like safety and trust, parenting, fear and loss. The overall aims of this teaching sequence are: ▪ To engage children with a story with which they will empathise. ▪ To explore themes and issues, and develop and sustain ideas through discussion, enabling children to make connections with their own lives. ▪ To develop creative responses to the text through drama, storytelling and artwork. ▪ To compose poetry. ▪ To write in role in order to explore and develop empathy for characters. ▪ To write with confidence for real purposes and audiences. |
Maths |
Year 5 and 6 children will start their Maths with number and place value, including understanding and recognising numbers up to millions. The next unit is decimals where children will be able to recognise and round numbers with decimal places. We will then be moving on to Geometry- properties of shape. |
PE
The three classes have PE on different days. Lions PE day is Tuesday, Elephants is Wednesday, Jaguars is Thursday. Please ensure your child is wearing the correct PE uniform. The unit we will be covering up to Christmas are Hockey, Tag Rugby, Netball and Dance. |
Music |
We follow the Charanga scheme of work and will be looking at Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. Throughout this unit we will be appraising the music, develop our musical language and understanding, singing and use the Glockenspiels. |
Guided Reading
Children's word level and comprehension skills will be developed through whole class guided reading sessions and one to one reading. |
Phonics |
Phonics is carried out on a one to one basis or within a small intervention group based on the ability of the child. These are regularly assessed and we follow Little Wandle for these. |
Computing |
The unit is called Systems and Searching. Children develop their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices. They consider small-scale systems as well as large-scale systems. They explain the input, output, and process aspects of a variety of different real-world systems. Children discover how information is found on the World Wide Web, through learning how search engines work (including how they select and rank results) and what influences searching, and through comparing different search engines. |
French
The units for this term are phonics and Les Fruits. We will be revising the key sounds that are used in French. In Les Fruits they will name and recognise up to 10 fruits in French, attempt to spell some of these nouns, ask somebody in French if they like a particular fruit and say what fruits they like and dislike. |
