Year 1 and Year 2 Cycle B (2022, 2024, 2026)

Reading

It is very important to read as often as possible with your children at home; every day is best, even if it is just 5 minutes sharing a book at bedtime.

Talk about the text as you go and ask questions - this will help the children develop their comprehension skills. Each time you read with your child please make a note in their reading record recording the date, alongside a comment if you wish. Please ensure to read each text a number of times with your child, as the re-reading of these texts will allow the children to develop their fluency skills.

Learning Term 5 Overview

English

In English this term, the children will be exploring the non-fiction text ‘Ways into History – Toys and Games’ by Sally Hewitt. In this unit, the children will read a non-fiction example and will be introduced to the different shapes that will help them analyse the different parts of a non-fiction text.  The children will also be building on their sentence work by ‘stacking sentences.’  They will focus on sentence construction and vocabulary and once the children have been modelled a sentence, in its correct form, the children will use this to form sentences of their own. The children will be exploring a variety of the skills from the Writing Rainbow, using our Fantastics including, using synonyms, questions, alliterations, rhyme and so on. At the end of the unit, the children will plan and create their own Information Leaflet using the information they have learnt throughout the term.

Maths

Year 2 Maths

In Maths this term, the year 2 children will be exploring Statistics. In this topic the children will be interpreting and constructing tables, pictograms and block diagrams. They will explore the use of a key and how this symbol represents the number of items.  In Measure the children will measure capacity using litres and millilitres. They will be estimating, comparing and ordering capacity, as well as measuring  temperature.

Year 1 Maths

In Maths this term we will be exploring a range of concepts including measurement of time, addition and subtraction. The children will continue to develop different addition and subtraction strategies for numbers up to 20 building the children’s core number sense and skills. In our measurement units, the children will start recognising and using language relating to dates exploring the days of the week and months of the year. Finally, the children will look at telling the time to the hour and half past. The children will also be practicing drawing hands on a clock face to demonstrate their understanding.

RE

Religious Education

The topic for RE this term is ‘To the End of the Earth.’ Throughout this topic we will be looking at the key events which happened after the resurrection of Jesus. We will start by looking at the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will be discussing the road to Emmaus story and how the disciples recognised Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit. We will discuss Jesus’ promise to the disciples at the Ascension. The children will have the opportunity to think about different symbol of the Holy Spirit and which they like best. The children will recognise and retell the Story of Pentecost. Finally, the children will think about way we can share Jesus’ mission going forward.

History

The topic for History this term is ‘How am I making History?’ The children will be looking at ordering key events of their lives on a timeline using the terms ‘before’ and ‘after’. The children will be discussing their key memories and putting them on a timeline. They will discuss with their peers why these memories are special and how they celebrate special events throughout the year. They will be thinking about similarities and differences between childhood now and in the past; using key vocabulary to compare the present, the past and possible changes in the future.

Science

This term in Science, the children will be learning about Materials and their everyday uses. The children will be exploring the different properties of materials that make them suitable or unsuitable for particular purposes. The children will use a range of equipment to make observations and conduct different tests. In these tests, the children will be investigating how some materials are stronger than others and how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting, and stretching.

D&T

This term in D&T, the children will be designing and constructing their own moving monsters! Using a range of creative materials to represent fur, scales and claws, the pupils will bring their imaginative creatures to life. As part of the project, the children will explore the mechanisms like linkages and pivots, learning how different parts work together to create movement in design. The children will decide the design criteria and sketch their ideas, drawing diagrams to show the linkage systems they plan to use for the parts they want to animate. The children will then create their monsters, applying their understanding of mechanisms and showcasing their creativity.
