Year 5 and Year 6 2024-2025

In our phase there are four classes; Lion, Panda, Elephant, and Jaguar.

As we are the oldest children at school, we always work hard to set a good example for the other children to follow. Many of the Year 5 and 6 children have important jobs within the school such as being members of the Chaplaincy Team, Play Leaders, Sports Ambassadors, School Councillors, Peer Mentors and also Buddies to the early years' children.

Here you can find lots of important information including what we are learning about this term, important dates, display photographs and information about everything we have been getting up to!

Please contact upperkeystage2@holyfamily.swindon.sch.uk if you have any queries regarding your child in Year 5/6 and Mrs Styles will get back to you.

Curriculum

Here you will find an overarching view of what the children will be taught over their time in Year 5 and Year 6. As we have mixed age year groups we work on a two year rolling cycle to ensure that all of the National Curriculum Objectives are covered across the 2 years.

Year 5 and Year 6 Cycle A (2025,2027)

Year 5 and Year 6 Cycle B (2024, 2026)

Please click on the link above to see the curriculum for the Year 5 and Year 6 children. These are the units they will be studying.

Learning in School-

RE

English

We look forward to immersing ourselves in a variety of texts, including poetry, play scripts, and narratives such as Letters from The Lighthouse by Emma Carroll  and The Journey by Francesca Sanna. Through our work, we will be developing our writing skills by writing across a range of genres and text types, and learning to use language and different sentence structures effectively to add detail, create atmosphere, and engage our readers. Through drama, presentations, and debates, we will also be developing our speaking and listening skills.

 Maths

We are excited to develop our ability to use and apply our mathematical skills to solve problems in real-life and mathematical contexts. During the Autumn term, we will develop our understanding of Number and Place Value, Decimals, Shape, Addition and Subtraction as well as Multiplication Division. through a range of activities tailored to each specific year group objective. We will continue to practise and apply our efficient written and mental calculation methods to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Throughout the term, we will also continue to practise and learn our times tables, KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts), and our termly arithmetic targets. Having quick recall of these facts will help us hugely in our maths work and problem-solving, so please help us practise at home. Quick-fire questions are a great way of doing this, and there are lots of games online!

PE

PE Days are as follows

Lion and Panda - Tuesday and Wednesday

Elephant- Monday and Thursday

Jaguar- Monday and Wednesday

This term, we will be developing teamwork, technical skills, and tactics in Netball, Outdoor & Adventurous activities, Football and Tag Rugby. Please make sure we always wear our PE kit to school on our dedicated days. We need a white t-shirt, plain black shorts, daps and/or trainers, and we can wear a dark-coloured tracksuit

 Science

We will develop our understanding of Electricity this term. We will learn about circuits and how the brightness of bulbs will change with different components and explain why this happens. We will plan and conduct scientific enquiries, learning to make appropriate predictions and draw suitable conclusions from results, relating this to our scientific knowledge. Later, our focus will shift to Light

Guided Reading

We will be exploring a range of text types, including poems, plays, and stories, to continue practising our reading skills. We will explain and discuss our understanding of what we read, drawing inferences from the text and justifying these with evidence. We will also be learning to retrieve and record key details and information from the text and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader.

To develop our comprehension and fluency, we also need to read lots at home. Please help us by listening to us read regularly at home and asking us lots of questions about the book.

Phonics Phonics is carried out on a one to one basis or within a small intervention group based on the ability of the child. These are regularly assessed and we follow Little Wandle for these.
 Computing

In computing we will be looking at systems and searching. They will understand input and output as well as understanding how information is found on the world wide web

Throughout all our computing lessons, we will be learning more about using technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly; recognising acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; and identifying a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.
