At Holy Family, House and Vice Captains are chosen to represent each of the 4 houses; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Our House Captains are chosen because they have demonstrated an ability to be fantastic role models and to embody our school virtues - compassion, kindness, honesty, forgiveness, friendship and respect. We want all our children across the whole school to look up to them.Matthew
Matthew was an apostle who was also called Levi, or Matthew the Levite. He was probably born in Galilee and worked as a tax collector at Capernaum when Christ called him to follow him (Mk 2:14; Lk 5:27-32).
Matthew preached in Jerusalem and then went to Ethiopia, where he was martyred.

Matthew is represented in liturgical art by an angel holding a lance, a coin, a pen, or a money box. His feast day is September 21.

Mark
St Mark's Gospel
Mark lived at the time of Jesus. Although he was not one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, he was a cousin of Saint Barnabas, an apostle.
Mark is called an evangelist because he wrote one of the four gospels. After Jesus' death, Mark went to Alexandria in Egypt to teach people about the Good News. He died there.

Mark is represented in liturgical art at a writing table, with a book or by a lion. His feast day is 25th April.

Luke
Luke was a doctor. He wrote his gospel for a man he calls 'most excellent Theophilus' (1:3). Luke wrote another book which is fifth in the New Testament, the Acts of the Apostles which tells what Jesus' disciples did after his rise back to Heaven.
Unlike the gospel writers Matthew, Mark and John, Luke was probably not Jewish but was Greek. He wrote the gospel mainly for non-Jewish people, (who were called Gentiles by the Jews). Luke wrote to prove that Jesus is the Son of God. Luke's gospel contains many similar stories of Jesus.

In art, Luke is represented by a winged ox. His feast day is October 18th.

John
John the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament.
Church tradition has held that John is the author of the Gospel of John and five other books of the New Testament.
It is traditionally believed that John was the youngest of the apostles and outlived them. He is said to have lived to an old age, dying at Ephesus sometime after AD 98.

St. John the Evangelist is frequently depicted in religious art alongside an eagle. His feast day is June 24th.
